Our Vision

At Lucille Roybal-Allard (LRA) DREAMS Magnet Center, our mission is to provide first through fifth grade students a strong social emotional and academic education that prepares them for 21st century college and career ready opportunities. Our program-wide theme of Design Thinking and Research, Engineering, Arts, Math, and Science (DREAMS) focuses on design thinking as a tool to tackle complex, systemic challenges that help develop socially conscious citizens. Based on the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards, our students are:

• Empowered Learners who use technology in productive, active ways.

• Digital Citizens who understand the importance of using and welding technology in socially responsible ways.

• Knowledge Constructors who critically curate resources when researching topics and ideas. Create products that are meaningful and provide solutions to big ideas.

• Global Collaborators who use digital tools to enhance understanding and work collaboratively, both locally and globally.

• Innovative Designers who employ a variety of tools to create new solutions to big ideas.

• Computational Thinkers who break down problems, collect data and sequence steps to create local and global solutions.

• Creative Communicators who navigate a variety of platforms to share their solutions to complex problems locally and globally.

To achieve our mission, DREAMS Magnet Center ensures that all students learn and achieve at high levels by creating a collaborative culture that focuses on results. We offer a comprehensive, multi-prong approach that involves the following:

• The teaching staff is highly trained in the areas of design thinking, research, engineering, the arts, science and mathematics through a social justice lens.  

• We foster a rigorous learning environment that draws from research-based teaching practices, resulting in higher-order thinking curriculum.

• Students are expected to be active learners who produce solutions to big problems.

• The arts are integral to the development of the whole child. It promotes self-directed learning and sharpens creative and critical thinking. DREAMS Magnet integrates Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Standards throughout all curricular areas.

• Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) is our approach to math because it helps students develop a deep and more comprehensive understanding of content, processes, and practices.

• Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) instruction is real world and authentic, pushing students to observe a phenomena and critically evaluate explanations and solutions to better understand the world around them.  

• Roybal-Allard Based Learning (RABL) uses design thinking processes in a trans-disciplinary project based learning approach.

These three National Board Certified teachers (Lisa Robles, Hang Nguyen and Maria Alcaraz) had a vision to create a place where design thinking would be the vehicle for creating socially conscious students who were ready for the 21st (22nd!) century!  Feel free to contact them if you'd like more information about our vision for our students.
